Suburbia

In almost every city most of the interesting stuff seems to happen in the suburbs. So I decided to get on the train and leave the inner city. And return with a full shopping bag as my goal.

Inga at Kista galleriaFirst I decided to go south and visit Kungens Kurva (Swedish for King’s Corner, named after king Gustaf V who crashed his Cadillac in this particular corner after a hunting session in 1946). Kungens Kurva is located in Skärholmen and you take the underground’s green line to get here. Here you can visit the first IKEA in the world and Heron City (a big mall including the gigantic home electronic chain Media Markt, movie theatres, food courts and so on). I filled up my yellow IKEA bag with usual cheap classics such as tea lights and candleholders. Then I headed north. To Kista Galleria. A really nice mall including lots of nice cafés, foodcourts, movie theatres, hair salons, pedicure salons, clothing stores and if you’re in to shoes (I can tell you I am) this is the place to be. There are shoes, shoes and even more shoes in various price ranges. After buying three pairs of shoes I went back to the underground station (located in the mall, perfect if you don’t want to mess up your hair if it’s rainy outside) and went back to the city. But I can tell you; the suburbs of Stockholm are the place to be if you’re a shoppaholic!

There’s a huge golf ball in Stockholm

This time I’m not going to tell you about cuisine. Even though you sure can eat good food here. I have noticed something that looks a bit like me but white and huge. And not made out of meat. I’m talking about the Globe Arenas.

Mr Meatball and GlobenThe Globe Arenas were opened in 1989 and consists of four arenas; Globen, Hovet, Annexet and Söderstadion. Even though the actual Globen is the most impressive. The inner height is 85 metres and the volume is 605 000 m3. The Globen Arenas also consist of a big shopping mall and the Quality Hotel Globe. And it is really easy to get there as well since The Globe has its own subway station. Most of the big events and concerts in Stockholm are held in one of these arenas, everything from the world championship in hockey to a U2 show. You should really try to catch some of the events that are taking place during your trip just to feel the greatness of the place. Personally I’m going to catch Sting’s old band The Police on the 30th of August when they hopefully are playing my favourite song ever - “Every Breath You Take”. Well Sting, no worries, one thing you won’t run out of when you’re in Globen is air.

Au revoir

Streetwear STHLM

Usually you see me in my traditional folk costume, but I’m also a big sucker for streetwear and Stockholm is a really nice spot if you’re into that.

Inga rockin' a new fittedOne of the biggest selections of street and skatewear you’ll find at Caliroots, Brunnsgatan 9. They rock brands such as ALIFE, Vans, Ice Cream, 10 Deep, Nike SB, Stussy, Crooks and Castles among others. The selection are updated on a regularly basis and they also have a really nice web shop. To find Sweden’s own top skatewear brand WESC you should head to their concept store at Kungsgatan 66. Here you find a nice selection of their latest collection as well as some cool skateboards, trucks and other skate items. Are you looking for sneakers, take the train to Södermalm and go to Sneakers n Stuff at Åsögatan. They have the biggest selection of vintage and new sneaker models from Air Jordan, Air Max, Air Force Ones, Converse, Adidas, New Balance etc etc. You’ll also find nice tees and sweaters from Milkcrate Clothing, Mixwell and Keep Diggin NYC. And the best part: If you’re almost out of cash, just grab a cup of coffee and lounge in their cafeteria while listening to the DJ spinning the latest club bangers.

Peace

Fast Food Country

You might think that I’m all about fancy expensive food. But think again. I love fast food. As long as it’s properly done and made out of fresh raw materials.

Mr Meatball at SlussenSo what is typical Swedish fast food? Well, it’s almost the same as in the rest of Western Europe. That will be hamburgers, kebab, hot dogs etc. But Sweden also offers some unique fast food. After been walking Götgatsbacken, Södermalm up and down, overdrawing your credit card in all the cool boutiques you should make a stop at Slussens Torg and eat fried herring with mashed potatoes and lingonberry preserve for a cheap amount. It’s a true classic and absolutely superb! If you’ve been shopping around Åhlens or PUB you might end up at Hötorget where you can buy some fresh fruit at the crazy fruit market for a “special price especially for you”. After that you should try Kungsgrillen. They are specialists in any kind of traditional Swedish fastfood such as meatballs (Yihoo!) with mashed potatoes, fried herring etc. (And make sure to be real hungry because the portions are measured to please bodybuilders.) Or go down in Hötorgshallen and eat really nice and price worthy fast food mainly from the Middle Eastern region. If you would like to go for a safe card, that will be hamburgers, you should try MAX (Vasagatan or Norrmalmstorg). Heading from the north of Sweden, Stockholm wasn’t blessed with this burger until mid 90’s. Their trademark is “our burgers are always prepared to order” which make them extra juicy and better tasting. If you ask me, this is the best flat meatball you can eat in Sweden.

Three flies in a Djurgården smash

Yesterday I took the red line and stopped at The University. No don’t get me wrong. I’m a true labourer and not interested in reading books in the library or taking classes in maths. I had other intentions with my trip.

Sven at Naturhistoriska RiksmuseetWalk about 100 meters from the University subway station and you find The Swedish Museum of Natural History. No you won’t miss it, the building is quite magnificent. This year the museum celebrates the 300th anniversary of Carl Linneau’s birth. Happy B-Day Calle! So besides taking the tour among ancient and present nordic animals and the very important Mission Climate Earth - Exhibtion you can discover the life and work of Linneaus. Actually very sexy. But the real highlight of The Swedish Museum of Natural History visit was Cosmonova. The only IMAX-cinema and the largest planetarium in Sweden. I watched the movie Deep Sea and it was quite an experience. Make sure you don’t have a tendency for sea sickness.
To finish off my “University-tour” I went to Bergianska Trädgården, Stockholms Botanical Garden. It’s located next to Brunnsviken and is a real oasis in Stockholm. I went for nice cup of coffee and just enjoyed the fantastic air and the trees and flowers from all around the world.

Yours truly
Sven

At the country, in the city

I’m back, and I’m still dressed up like a meatball! In fact, I now feel so comfortable in my outfit, I’m a little uncertain whether I actually make any impression when I go out in town. That’s why I decided to go a little further the last time I went out for a bite!

Mr. Meatball leaving LandetI decided to go to a restaurant called Landet, not only because the name actually means “The Country”, but also because it lies a safe 5 minute underground ride outside the central parts of Stockholm. The area of Telefonplan is most likely named so because of the old telephone factory that was built there. Today this 20,000 square metre building is the home of approximately a thousand talented students who study at Konstfack, Stockholm’s very own University College of arts, craft and design. Opposite the school lies Landet. A safe haven outside of town for gastronomic gurus like myself. I wasted no time and took a table by the window. The lovely looking outside serving was unfortunately already seated. I enjoyed a great dinner, with their special summer menu offering me the likes of an Atlantic Halibut starter, a honey-glazed file of pork chop as a main course, and a scrumptious dessert that reminded me of rhubarb crumble. Which just happens to be my favourite dessert, all categories.

Here’s to you,
Mr Meatball

Outskirt adventures!

What an adventure I have been on this time! I decided to travel a little further than usual, and eventually ended up on the beautiful island of Oaxen, in the midst of the inlet that leads towards Södertälje. The closest city to Stockholm in the south.

Puffy at OaxenNow, the island of Oaxen itself is strikingly beautiful like most of the archipelagic islands in and around Stockholm. What sets Oaxen apart from the rest is without a doubt the incredible restaurant that one can find here. This rather upscale place was opened in 1994, and has actually been awarded for being the best restaurant in all of Sweden for the past three years! An international magazine recently placed Restaurant Oaxen at nr. 39 on a list of the world’s 50 best restaurants. With that said, I take it it comes without saying that the food is good. Seeing as I rarely set my foot, I mean, lay anchor… inside these places very often, I can only really recommend that one goes ahead with trying the tasting menu. The most expensive choice by far, but at least you won’t have missed out on anything. Another thing not to miss out on, except if you go there by boat yourself, is the accommodation available on board the M/S Stjernorp. Originally a steamboat built in 1870, the ship today serves as a hotel, rocking all the full-up guests to sleep.

What are you waiting for?

A day in the name of Sture

More than often a girl needs everything, and what better way to serve this need than to go to a place where one can find everything? Right in the heart of town, by Stureplan, I decided to enjoy a day with a little of everything!

Inga taking a swimThe shopping mall of Sturegallerian is one of my firm favourites, with a wide selection of great stores, both well known and smaller designer boutiques. It’s so easy to lose track of time in here, especially when wandering around the stores with some friends. When we went here recently however, we made sure we wouldn’t lose track of our time. We immediately went to the bathing facilities of Sturebadet that lie within the mall. Here we booked ourselves up for some nice treatments during the afternoon. They offer great massages, facial treatments, body, feet, and anything else one could possibly require from a good spa. Once you’ve had your treatment, a nice little swim in the pool is dearly recommended. We had a fantastic time, even though we cut our shopping spree short of several hours. And once we were done at Sturebadet, we decided to treat ourselves to some more of the Sture-hospitality found around here. Just outside, with a fabulous outdoor seating towards Stureplan, we soon found ourselves sipping white wine spritzers at Sturehof. The food by the way is equally divine.

Hoping your days are as good as mine!
Inga

The Modern Art Museum

The Modern Art Museum in Stockholm, or Moderna Museet as we call it, is a wonderful spot that shouldn’t be missed on any trip to our fantastic town. I went there just to double-check before telling you this.

Sven at Moderna MuseetThe museum lies beautifully placed on one of the most central islands of the city, Skeppsholmen. This historical island in the heart of the Stockholm inlet is mainly uninhabited, and instead houses museums, schools, and a bunch of old marine and military buildings that were all built due to the island’s important position. The Moderna Museum itself was opened in 1958, and reopened as late as 1998 in it’s new shape – a wonderful building designed by the Spanish architect Rafael Moneo. Getting to the island is easy, either take the 5-minute walk from Kungsträdgården in central town, or hop on a boat from Nybrokajen. Once inside, I warmly recommend you do what I always do. Enjoy the current exhibitions while taking an exciting stroll through the whole museum. The collections are breathtaking, with the international one including fine works by the likes of Pablo Picasso, Giacomo Balla, Max Ernst, Salvador Dalí, Joan Miró, Andy Warhol, and many, many more. And when your legs are tired, have a well-deserved break in the wonderful café that overlooks Djurgården and the magnificent Vasa Museum, or spend your money in the interesting store!

I hope to see you soon!

Love Sven

The club and the theatre

I went out last Saturday and found myself wandering around the pleasant city centre - aimlessly looking for something to take me by surprise. When I came to the Berzelii Park, I entered the China Theatre and discovered a nightclub!

Miss Disco shaking it at Pom PomThe China Theatre is an impressive venue, and was originally unveiled as a cinema in 1928. Architect Albin Stark drew inspiration from his recent trip to China, hence the name I guess. Anyway, today the place is mostly used for concerts, shows, musicals and so on. In other words, if you want to hit a movie, this is not the place nowadays! I found a long queue outside, and a nightclub inside - which made me feel both happy and uninformed all at once. The latter feeling however faded after about a minute. The club for the evening was called Pom-Pom. I reckoned I fit in perfectly in my disco ball outfit. Other nights at the China Theatre you can find clubs such as Raw Fusion and Hanoi by night! If you’re coming to Stockholm looking for a place with an East-Asian club feel to it, look no further. This is definitely where I’ll be going every time I feel this urge anyway. Well, that was all for now.

Party on.
Miss D
