Busy busy!

Well I’ve been so busy I’m not sure how to fit it all into this entry, but I’ll give it my best shot. First there were all those things I did, and then all the stuff that I’m going to do! Stockholm is one busy city I must confess!

Miss Disco outside Spy BarSo I went to the fashionable Spy Bar the other day. The queue was as always a little longer than I’d hoped, then again – I always show up late. The doormen always let their favourite disco ball pass through though. Inside the crowd was loud and enjoying themselves, and all in all it’s still an exceptionally good place to party. Another place I’ve recently discovered is the upstairs floor of the restaurant Landet. A little ride outside of the city centre, but well worth it – this scene offers great clubs, and the occasional live gig from both well-known acts as well as the bright future of tomorrow. Apart from the usual nightclubs, I’ve also found that my disco ball costume is a big hit at several of the great bars around town. Had a few drinks with some friends the other day, and I was the centre of all attention. We managed to cover the rounds at Scandic Anglais, East, and Riche in all but one single evening! Try to beat that if you can. If you want to know what’s going on in town, I found a great place to keep track. Click here and see for yourself.

Life’s a party,

A view to a meal

After the last unexpected late-night dinner turning into a somewhat unwanted meeting with Sven I decided to plan my next dinner adventure carefully. That’s why I ended up going to Gondolen. Difficult to be spotted, and way out of Sven’s league.

Mr. Meatball on the way to GondolenGondolen is the magical home of visionary chef Erik Lallerstedt, one of Sweden’s most famous chefs. The food is excellent, the view is even better, and the drinks are wonderful. Situated on the top floor of the highest building overlooking the Old Town at Slussen, the view offers panoramic sunsets on any given day of the year. I started out by ordering the smoked scallop with shrimps in herb and pepper dressing and lime flavoured cottage cheese. Not quite like meatballs, but very yummy all the same. Thereafter I have to say I really enjoyed the small confit baked poussin with dark chicken broth and bacon. What a culinary experience! I skipped desert completely and headed over to the bar instead. The Daquiri may be a classic, but never quite as good as the one they serve here at Gondolen. Whatever you do, make sure to dine at Gondolen when in Stockholm.

A day off

A girl can’t just go shopping all the time, I mean who has the time for that? Moreover, hours and hours of frivolous spending sprees uses up a lot of energy. That’s why I took a well-deserved day off and went for coffee all day long.

Inga at SaturnusI started off with a quick latte to go at my nearby café, Svart Kaffe. After that I was walking along doing everything in my power to keep my eyes off the window displays that kept popping up all over the place. Why are there so many interesting stores I thought to myself! I’d made some plans with some friends, so I kept walking and managed to only enter 2 shops before arriving at Saturnus. Now is this place lovely or what? I enjoyed the usual gossip and chitchat while glancing at what all the other fashionable girls were wearing. The enormous cinnamon buns are a meal in themselves, and the large latte is, well, large! However, we stayed so long we eventually decided to just stay put and enjoy our dinner there too. The wine was also well deserved and delicious I must say!Mr Meatball was here!

Lots of love,
Inga

Party on

From central Stockholm it’s easy to get on a boat and head out on a new adventure every day. The possibilities and adventures are hard to number, therefore I usually just head on down and get on the first best ride.

Total Eclipse of the Heart! Some people get on these ferries to party, some use them as transport for wherever they’re going, and some just like a nice day out at sea. I for one enjoy the entertainment found on several of these trips. Sometimes there’s the culinary experience at sea, like the different Swedish tradition of “Räkfrossa”. Slightly difficult to translate, but it more or less means shrimp-guzzling. Lots of people board, eat a wonderful seafood buffet, and drink snaps. Then there’s the music. If you’re lucky, you might end up on a boat with a nice jazz band, or some other pleasant music to take you through the archipelago. I however prefer the karaoke theme. I’ll take on anything with a microphone while standing there in the limelight. Be it Barry Manilow, or even Beyoncé Knowles – it all brings back nice memories of singing and dancing in Stockholm The Musical.

Here’s singing for you, kid

Gay Stockholm!

Lots of my friends tell me how wonderful it is to live in a town like Stockholm. Because, not only does Stockholm host the largest gay festival in all of Scandinavia, there’s so much more to enjoy than just the regular rainbow bars.

Pride-SvenThe Pride festival usually takes place towards the end of July every year, and is complete with visitors from far and abroad. Stockholmers celebrate for an entire week, enjoying a jam-packed festival program along with seminars, exhibitions, a film festival, theatre and a large festival area open during daytime. Keeping up to date of gay and lesbian Stockholm is easily done here. My friends on the other hand think I’m way beyond open-minded, what with all my lamppost swinging and singing. Speaking of which, the time for all of that is nigh! The other day I enjoyed a great brunch at the Radisson SAS Strand Restaurant & Lounge, before singing and swinging those calories away all along Skeppsbron. (the waterfront walk that runs through the Old Town). Lovely!

That was all for now,
Sven

Can’t stop moving!

Hey everyone. This time round I thought I’d reveal some information on where to go in the near future. That is, if you’re in Stockholm and you want to party - because the club scene is bustling with activity!

NeuNow, there are a whole lot of things happening on the club scene in town, most notably some new places have appeared. First there’s the revamped Hell’s Kitchen that has replaced the former resident in the same house at Stureplan, (also called kitchen, but in the less cool Swedish way: “Köket”.) Next door, a brand new concept called Neu has opened. This nightclub promises to offer great service, and claim they don’t have any dance floors. I know for a fact that this is not the case, dancing was fully possible and I did it in style. Anyway, with the spring finally here, it’s only a matter of time until the weather allows for all those great outdoor nightclubs. And if outdoors is what you like, I can warmly recommend Debaser where one can also warm to indoor concerts. Apart from that, I guess it’s the usual trade for now. I’m off to a friend’s club at Spy Bar, I’ll let you know all about that next time!

Keep spinning,
Miss Disco

Meatball time!

Get ready to roll! Your favourite meatball impersonated is back with another report on eating, drinking, and enjoying life in the wonderful city of Stockholm. This time I can also reveal the true story behind Sven’s latest blog entry.

Sven and Meatball at F12So I see Sven decided to comment on how he ruined my dinner the other day. There I was, enjoying a fantastic meal at F12, savouring the amazing flavours of my beef carpaccio with artichoke starter – when that fool comes singing and dancing down the street. You should really get a glance of the guy when he swings around the lampposts, it’s as if he thinks it’s musical-day, every day. And then he sits down, talking and talking about singing and dancing. It’s as if he doesn’t understand that I mainly participated due to the incredible possibility to star as a life-size meatball. Oh well, the food WAS excellent I have to say. After that I tried all sorts of excuses but he wouldn’t have any of it, so I agreed to have a drink with him at Café Opera. Next time I’ll make sure to eat at a place where he cannot find me. I’ll let you all know how it proceeds.

Nippy but refreshing

So I decided to go on a boat trip the other day, and even though the lovely spring has come to stay, it’s not quite summer yet. But that doesn’t mean the archipelago isn’t lovely, on the contrary if you ask me!

ArchipelagoYou see, there’s not much that beats breaking the waves on an old-fashioned steamboat prior to the perceived “season”. When the ice has melted, and the vegetation begins to blossom on every little islet, having the archipelago all to yourself is among the best things in life. Well, in my life that is. I eventually got off at Vaxholm, not too far out and an easy start to my archipelagic adventures of this year. The seaside town on the outskirts of Stockholm was bustling with weekend activity and people enjoying the sun. The old harbour and city has a history from the 16th century, and the main fortress guarding the seaward entrance to the city of Stockholm was in it’s current shape finished in 1863. I took some time to wander around the harbour, enjoyed an ice cream in the sun, and then I went back home. Next time I’ll be travelling much further into the Stockholm archipelago.

See you!

A day on Södermalm!

Let me tell you all about the other day! I walked over to Södermalm in the lovely fresh air, and allowed myself to take the time to stop by almost every store I passed. Now, if that isn’t life, then you tell me!

Me on GötgatanAfter passing Slussen I walked up the hill that is Götgatsbacken. Although fairly steep, it’s well worth the effort once you reach all the lovely shops and stores. I began by looking through H&M, which is what all Swedes do when the chance appears. Then I continued to visit the whole Bruno Galleria, including stores such as Whyred, Filippa K, STUK, Adidas originals, and so on. Not content with a shopping bag in every hand, I continued out on the street again, popping in and out all over the place. Since the cars were recently banned on this lovely street, it’s a shopper’s paradise! I had a quick latte inside Wayne’s coffee while reading some magazine’s that I bought in the adjacent newsagent. Thereafter, with my new-found energy, I headed on over to Krukmakargatan to enjoy the cluster of stores that all lie side by side. I went to Nitty Gritty, A.P.C, Carhartt, and Fred Perry! After that I was so exhausted I went straight home to bed.Mr Meatball was here!

Another Stockholm evening

Last time I told you I was heading off to the SkyBar, and what an evening it turned out to be! Starting out on the 9th floor of the Radisson SAS Royal Viking Hotel I ended up having a fantastic dinner with Mr Meatball.

Sven and Meatball at F12After enjoying a couple of cocktails and some great service (beaten only by the amazing view of the sunset) I realised it was dinnertime. When at the SkyBar eating is easily accomplished at Stockholm Fisk on the ground floor. However, seeing as I have had 4 dinners there in the last 3 days I decided to go somewhere else. Took a stroll down Vasagatan, and soon found myself on Fredsgatan. To my great surprise I saw Mr Meatball enjoying his supper in the window of the gourmet restaurant F12. I joined him, and we spoke of fond Stockholm the Musical memories that were every now and then interrupted by Meatball’s praise for the food. I had the Arctic Char with dill, fantastic! After that we tried their desserts. I downed the almond soufflé with rosehip, while Meatball insisted on having perfect ball-shaped scoops of vanilla ice cream. He has a sincere hang-up on spheres that fellow.

See you around in town,
Sven
